G321 Foundation Portfolio
You have 10 weeks in order to complete this piece of coursework.
Tasks that should be clearly labeled and present on your blogs:
- Blog post responding to the brief "To produce the first 2 minute opening sequence and title credits for a new fictional film". This should include a personal response from you about what you hope to achieve, what skills you hope to develop, what types of films inspire you and how you intend to approach the project.
- Blog post researching genre. You should analyse and examine the types of genres that exist and show a process of elimination and refinement, whereby you home in on a particular genre or sub-genre. This may be presented as two blog posts, the second should identify all the codes and conventions of that genre and get you thinking about what you would like to achieve in your film.
- Blog post researching Media Institutions. Part of your research should include analysing film studios, distributors and production companies involved in the manufacturing of feature films of your chosen genre. You should use appropriate media language to analyse the connotations of each logo and start thinking about your own design ideas.
- Blog post reflecting on your learning process/journey. You should be regularly blogging about ideas, thoughts, inspiration, etc. on your blog. The blog is your production diary that will be looked at by the examiner when they moderate your work in January. Make sure that you try to reflect using key media language and the key media concepts.
- Blog post showing your understanding of camera shots and language. You should go out and evidence this by using your camera phone or digital camera to take pictures of all the angles and shot types that we looked at. Include captions and explanation as to how you might use the shots.
- You should redevelop your opening sequence analysis to include narrative theory, representation, audience expectations, generic codes and conventions, institution and media language (camera, sound, editing, mise-en-scene). You will need to do another one of these for your chosen sub-genre. Examiners expect to see at least 2 detailed analyses.
THIS SHOULD TAKE YOU UPTO ABOUT 6 BLOG POSTS BY THE START OF NEXT WEEK.
YOU SHOULD BE BLOGGING 2-3 TIMES A WEEK.
THIS IS AN EXPECTATION AND STRICTLY ENFORCED BY THE EXAMINERS AS EVIDENCE OF EFFECTIVE PROGRESS AND 'JOURNEY'.

AS Media Studies - Summer Assignment
Over the summer holidays, I'd like you to start looking at film openings more critically.
Visit www.artofthetitle.com and examine how they have broken title sequences down into 9 key shots.
Task: I would like you to do the same for a film of your choice, taking 9 screen grabs and evaluating why you chose it and what you like/enjoy about the sequence from a critical perspective.
Secondly, I would like you to set up your own blog. Either create one of blogspot (www.blogger.com), or use tubmlr, www.posterous.com or www.wix.com.
The blogs should relate to media and AS or coursework and include a video blog, by you, or a voki outlining your expectations of the course.
Lastly, you should visit http://www.alevelmedia.co.uk/page25.php and revise the key media concepts, these will be part of your foundations for media language.

News Articles to support your case studies and where to find them
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17270817 use the site to search for articles about your case studies and other related stories to do with piracy and new technologies.
The above story links to downloading and piracy, an issue that affects all media industries.
As Media students you should be actively taking an interest in what's happening in 'the media' and scour the following websites to help you prepare for the exam and your case study:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media great for opinion and different sectors of the Media
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/ a good alternative
http://www.techradar.com/news/video good for anything tech related!
http://www.machinima.com/ good for trending/what's new with tech/online etc.

Completed Evaluations
Happy New Year!
Now the serious stuff, by Friday all the coursework is due to be completed so that it can be marked fairly and accurately and sent to moderators by Monday 8th Jan. Sadly, I can't see anyone's evaluations and limited evidence that they have been distributing their videos on the internet to audiences.
This would be a real shame to throw away valuable marks at this stage in the coursework - do you want 10 weeks of hard work to be at its best or are you happy with only giving 80%?
Lets be organised and ready for Wednesday's lesson please.
